Installing and Using Plex Client Apps

After media has been added to your Plex Home Media Server, we can install and setup the Plex Cleint App on various streaming devices.

In the instance below, we will install Plex on a Fire TV Stick 4K. However, you can easily install the Plex app from any device’s App Store.

1. From device home screen, scroll to search and type Plex

2. Choose the Plex app

3. Click Download

4. Wait for app to install

5. When finished, click Open

6. Select Sign In

7. Take note of activation code

8. Open any Browser and go to plet.tv/link and enter the provided activation code. Click Link

9. Wait for Plex to check Code

10. Account Linked message will appear when your device has been authorized

11. On your streaming device, choose your Plex Media Server

12. Click Continue

13. Customize your content and choose continue again

14. On the left side menu bar, hover over Movies and click Library

15. Movies from your Home Media Server will now appear

16. You can also view downloaded Music or other media

That’s it! Your Plex Client app is now set up and ready for use.

Plex Subscription

Most Plex users find the Plex Free Service is adequate for their media and streaming needs.

The Free Version of Plex will provide you with the following features:

• Unlimited use of Media Server
• Movie and TV Streaming App
• News Podcasts, and Web Shows Support
• All non-mobile Client apps (and mobile apps with some restrictions)
• TIDAL 30-second song previews

However, Plex also offers a premium subscription called Plex Pass with some advanced benefits.

Plex Pass

For those who want a more in-depth experience, you may want to consider purchasing a Plex Pass subscription.

The Plex Pass is available in 3 packages including monthly, yearly, and lifetime:

Plex Pass subscribers get everything included in the free Plex package but with some additional features.

This includes:

• Full mobile app use
• Stream trailers and extras
• Set up Plex Home with the ability to switch between accounts and restrict access
• Early Preview access to new apps and features

The biggest component provided with the Plex Pass is the ability to use the full functionality of the mobile app.

Free users are not able to transmit content within their Plex Server to the mobile app. That means if you want to view content on your mobile phone from your home server, you must have the Plex Pass.

This is perfect for those who travel frequently or want to view their home media on the go.

Plex Live TV & DVR

For those who want to get more out of Plex, the Live TV & DVR feature works great to record shows OTA (Over the Air).

This will require a Plex Pass as well as a DVR Tuner and an OTA Antenna.

Most OTA Antennas are compatible with Plex and work well with any of the tuners listed above. Both Indoor and Outdoor antennas will work with the Plex DVR system.

While the Plex Pass adds some beneficial extras to your streaming experience, most will find the free version of Plex is adequate for their needs.

Secure Connections

By default, the Plex Media Server will prefer to use secure connections for apps that support them. Not all apps support connecting securely, though. You should make sure you aren’t unintentionally blocking unsupported apps.

1. Check if your app
2. If the app is not supported, make sure that you have the Secure connections server setting set to (not Required)

Tip!: Most Plex apps that support secure connections will be set by default to not connect to servers that are not available securely. So, you should make sure that you do not set the server’s Secure connections setting to , in that case, or else the app will not be allowed to connect.

DNS Rebinding

Some routers or modems won’t allow DNS Rebinding by default, which can affect or even prevent an app from being able to connect with a Plex Media Server on the local network. For most users, this won’t be an issue, but some users of more advanced routers (or those provided by some ISPs) may run into issues.

Similarly, some DNS providers (such as your ISP) may prevent DNS Rebinding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is TIDAL free to all Plex users?

No. Access to TIDAL requires a subscription to the TIDAL service, which can be purchased through Plex (or elsewhere, though you won’t necessarily enjoy some of the Plex benefits if you purchase elsewhere). It is not a free service. You can start a free TIDAL trial to try things out.

How do I start a TIDAL subscription with Plex?

To start a new TIDAL subscription on a free Plex account (or to add one to a Plex account that already has a Plex Pass subscription), you can visit our main TIDAL page. As part of the sign up process, you’ll get redirected to the TIDAL site to create an account there and confirm that you want to link/authorize Plex.

Do I need a Plex Pass subscription?

A Plex Pass subscription is not required to use TIDAL.

If you do already have a Plex Pass subscription, then you’ll automatically get a discount on the TIDAL subscription for being a Plex Pass subscriber, when signing up through us.

Do I need a Plex Media Server to use TIDAL?

Nope! If you have a TIDAL subscription linked to your Plex account, you can access TIDAL content in a supported app, regardless of whether you have your own Plex Media Server or not.

However, if you do run your own server and have a music library, then you’ll enjoy extra integration with TIDAL such as albums for an artist that are available on TIDAL, but missing from your library.

If I link/add a TIDAL subscription to my account, is it shared with other users?

Having a TIDAL subscription linked to a Plex account is a 1:1 relationship. The Plex account to which it is linked will have access to TIDAL content. Shared accounts (including Plex Home members) will not have access to TIDAL.

If you already have a “Family Premium” or “Family HiFi” TIDAL plan through TIDAL, you can link to a different Plex account for each of the available TIDAL members. (See information on how to link to an existing subscription in our article.)

How many apps can stream from TIDAL at the same time?

As with subscriptions through TIDAL itself, you can use a single device/app to stream from TIDAL at any one time. If you’re already streaming some TIDAL music on your Plex for Android mobile app, for instance, you won’t be able to also stream TIDAL content on your Apple TV’s Plex app at the same time.

Are TIDAL subscriptions through Plex the same as elsewhere?

A TIDAL subscription through Plex will be identical to one purchased elsewhere (such as through TIDAL itself). However, there are a few TIDAL features that are only available when using official TIDAL apps (or the TIDAL website) and are not available through partners’ apps, such as Plex.

• While the HiFi plan does have access to lossless quality music in Plex, it does not have access to “master-quality” (MQA) music when played through Plex.
• You cannot download TIDAL music to Plex mobile apps for TIDAL’s “Offline Mode”. (This also applies to our own Mobile Sync feature; it is not possible to sync TIDAL content.)
• You cannot purchase music from TIDAL through Plex.

All of these features are available when using supported official TIDAL apps directly, but not when accessing TIDAL through partner apps, such as our Plex apps.

Can I use Mobile Sync with TIDAL content?

The ability to download TIDAL music is not available to partners such as Plex. That means that it is not possible to download/sync TIDAL content using our Mobile Sync feature, sorry.

How do I migrate to TIDAL if I already use ?

If you already use another streaming music service, then chances are that you have lots of playlists and favorites that you wouldn’t want to lose. Luckily, you can use a service like Soundiiz to transfer that music data from your old streaming music service to TIDAL!

Getting started with Plex isn’t really any different than installing other software, except that you first install the server software. Then, you install apps on your devices so that each device can connect to the server.

Preparing and Organizing Your Media Collection

Getting your media set up can be an important step. As you set up your Plex Media Server, you’ll be creating libraries for your media—movies, TV shows, music, photos, and home videos. When you do so, Plex will identify and match content like movies and TV shows and then gather things like movie poster artwork, movie casts, TV episode descriptions, and more to make your collections beautiful.

Plex will do its best to automatically identify and match your content. You can help that process out and give yourself the very best results by ensuring that your content follows our media preparation guidelines.

Plex Alternatives

While Plex is a fabulous media streaming tool, it may not be for everyone.

Due to the home media server needed for use, some may fall short of the requirements to get started using Plex.

Luckily, there are a few other options that require less hardware and aren’t as time-consuming.

The most popular way to watch Movies and TV Shows is via streaming device. There are hundreds of devices to choose from for streaming VOD content. The most popular today is the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4k.

This is due to it’s “jailbreaking” abilities that will enable the side-loading of applications not available within the Amazon App Store.

Jailbreaking your Firestick is the best way to get unlimited Movies, TV Shows, Live TV, and more, all for FREE.

Purchasing a streaming device will give you access to streaming apps that feature unlimited content for your viewing enjoyment.

TROYPOINT has created a list of the Best APK’s for streaming Movies and TV Shows that is updated daily.

These APK’s will provide unlimited content including Movies and TV Shows for streaming on your preferred device.

Link to an Existing TIDAL Subscription for Access

If you already have a TIDAL subscription (whether “Premium” or “HiFi”) and simply want to link to it so that your Plex apps have access, you can do that, too.

1. Visit your in the web app
2. Choose the Other Services link
3. Follow the Link your TIDAL account link, which will take you through the TIDAL site to authorize the account linking

In some cases, you may then need to restart your Plex Media Server or client apps to pick up the change. Otherwise, you can now start taking advantage of access to TIDAL through your Plex apps.

Note: Simply linking to an existing subscription like this lets you access TIDAL content in Plex, but it will not give your account any of the premium Plex features or a Plex Pass subscription that you can enjoy when the TIDAL subscription is managed and billed through Plex.

** Sonos support available when controlled via Android or iOS mobile apps, which requires an active Plex Pass subscription.

Note: If you disable DRM support in your browser, you may receive a security warning and/or be unable to play TIDAL content.

После применения настроек ваша приставка вновь получит привычный для себя IP.

Владельцам сетевых хранилищ я бы также посоветовал выполнить настройку DNS до установки PlexConnect.

Теперь отправляемся в Настройки –> Основные, выделяем пункт «Отправлять данные в Apple» и нажимаем кнопку Play/Pause на пульте. Выбираем пункт «Добавить профиль». В поле ввода вносим:

После применения настройки профиль добавится к списку сертификатов.

Важно! Если при добавлении профиля сертификата у вас возникает какая-либо ошибка (например, код 109), то почти наверняка вам необходимо проверить настройки брандмауера (firewall)

Шаг третий. Создание сертификата.

Для Windows. Пользователям необходимо предварительно скачать и установить OpenSSL Win 32 light и  Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (x86).

Далее запускаете командную строку (cmd.exe) с правами администратора и выполняете следующую команду:

C:\OpenSSL-Win32\bin\openssl.exe req -new -nodes -newkey rsa:2048 -out C:\trailers.pem -keyout C:\trailers.key -x509 -days 7300 -subj “/C=US/CN=trailers.apple.com” -config C:\OpenSSL-Win32\bin\openssl.cfg

Клиенты для PLEX Media Server

UI и UX для всех клиентов выполнены по единым правилам, перемещение с одного устройства на другое не вызывает трудностей, а взаимодействие с приложениями в процессе использования приносит удовольствие.

Официальный клиент для Apple TV4 и хак для Apple TV3

Для Apple TV4 доступно официальное приложение PLEX в App Store, а для установки на Apple TV3 потребуются некоторые действия.

Среди предустановленных приложений на Apple TV3 нет PLEX, как и нет Jailbreak’а для третьей версии, но есть одна лазейка в приложении “Трейлеры”. Весь контент в трейлерах — простая веб страница, которую можно подменить.

OpenPLEX позволяет сформировать контент для приложения “Трейлеры”, сгенерировать сертификаты.

В итоге необходимо прописать DNS на приставке и на открытии «Трейлеров» будет запускаться упрощенный клиент PLEX.

Вернемся к Apple TV 4. Для неё доступна установка официального приложения из App Store. Apple накладывает ограничения на разработчиков, но клиент работает стабильно, выглядит так же прекрасно, как iOS или веб клиенты.

PLEX для iOS

Приложение «PLEX» для iOS бесплатное, но включает два типа встроенных покупок (In App Purchase):

• бессрочная разблокировка проигрывания;
• активация PLEX Pass на 1 месяц.

С первым пунктом более-менее все понятно, он снимает 2-х минутное ограничение на проигрывание трека или просмотр фильма. За него нужно заплатить один раз in-app-purchase и забыть.

Про подписку PLEX Pass я расскажу чуть позже, а сейчас вернемся к использованию приложения на iOS с разблокированными функциями:

Стриминг без ограничений. Если сервер доступен во внешней сети, не обязательно синхронизировать контент на телефоне.
Синхронизация контента для проигрывания оффлайн

Самолет или деревня, не важно где, но контент будет доступен без сети.
Выгрузка медиатеки (фотографий и видео) на PLEX Media Server.

Video

Local Quality

This sets the quality to use when streaming content on your local network. In most cases, you can set this to a high value (such as “Original”). Higher settings produce better video quality but require more network bandwidth.

Remote Quality

You can set the quality to use when streaming content from a remote Plex Media Server. The quality you can reliably use is typically limited by either your download bandwidth or the upload bandwidth from the source Plex Media Server.

Online Quality

You can set the quality to use when streaming content from online sources in Plex, such as free Movies & Shows or Web Shows. The quality you can reliably use is typically limited by either your download bandwidth or the network speed of the source website for the content which you’re streaming.

Allow Display Mode Switching

This feature enables Plex Media Player to change the display refresh rate to the same value (or multiple of) as the fps the video was encoded in (or as close as possible) before starting playback. This allows Plex Media Player to minimize the amount of stutter/judder that you might otherwise see when playing back videos which do not match up well.

Hardware Decoding

The Hardware Decoding toggle enables or disables hardware decoding so long as the device supports it. This can be useful when playing high-definition media on devices which have a less powerful CPU.

Deinterlace

This allows Plex Media Player to attempt to deinterlace media that is interlaced.

Note: The Deinterlace setting does not apply in Mac OS X if the Hardware Decoding option is enabled.

Allow Direct Play

When playing media that is natively compatible, the Allow Direct Play toggle allows the app to directly play it without any conversion. You will almost always want this enabled.

Allow Direct Stream

When enabled, the Allow Direct Stream toggle allows the server to copy compatible audio and video streams without converting them and repackage the streams inside a natively supported container. You will almost always want this enabled.

Sync Mode

The Sync Mode setting controls which clock to be used during playback, and allows the user to choose between and .

• Choosing will make Plex Media Player skip or repeat video frames in regular intervals if the frame rates don’t match exactly (or exact multiples).
• Choosing will play the video according to the display refresh rate (so 23.976 is sped up to 24 fps if necessary, for instance) and resample the audio to keep it in sync with the video.

If it is more important to you that there is no video stuttering/frame duplication when you have a setup which is not capable of switching the computer output to the exact same (or multiple) Hz as the video has fps, then is your choice. If it is more important to you that Plex Media Player does not resample the audio when the Hz does not align with the fps, then should be your choice.

Network Cache

The Network Cache setting allows the user to specify the maximum size of the network cache used by Plex Media Player. Most users will want to leave this set to Default (75MB).

Video Aspect

Choose whether (and how) the aspect ratio of video might get changed for display. Most users will want to stick to the default value.

• Display normally
• Zoom (can cut off video)
• Force video to 4:3
• Force video to 16:9
• Force 4:3 video to 16:9
• Stretch video to screen
• Disable all scaling
• Custom

4. Синхронизация с мобильными клиентами. Любой контент можно загрузить на телефон или планшет. Если пробросить сервер в «сеть», можно обойтись бесплатным стримингом.
5. Выгрузка фотографий и видео с мобильного устройства на сервер. Функция удобная, но мне не нравится, как работает просмотр фотографий.
6. Синхронизация с облаком. Можно выгрузить фильм на Google Drive.
7. PLEX Home — предоставление доступа к медиатеке другим членам семьи с разделением доступа.
8. PLEX Cloud — не нужно держать домашний сервер, можно выгрузить весь контент на Amazon Clud Drive, Google Drive, Dropbox, OndeDrive и PLEX сможет самостоятельно выступать сервером.
